All new master students for Information Security (MIS), Applied Computer Science (MACS), Color Informatics and Media Technology (CIMeT) and User Centered Media Design (MBMD) (+ a few more) attended the introduction on tuesday 21. august 2012. We were welcomed, all the professors introduced themselves, we got a few hints of why they seem to work so little (they presumably do a lot of work writing papers), and we got a lot of administrative information. We were also told to do our best and give feedback. Our photos were taken during the lunch, and we got our student ID cards.

We were split in parallel sessions during the information about each master programe. Information security has 3 electives:

The first semester (autumn) is equal to all the MIS students, and thus giving us time to decide. We've got six subjects this fall, 3 of them followed by exams during the first half and the rest the second half. This master programe can be attended as a full time track or part time 3 or 4 years. The part time students got a brief later that day. They had to be specially careful making sure they register for both lectures and exam (StudentWeb).

The most important administrative information could be summarized like this:

    • Pay the registration fee (750 NOK)
    • Log on StudentWeb where you must read and sign a few guidelines/rules, confirm your subject plan (part time students can choose any logical ordering of the subjects they find suits them) and make sure you are registered for both lectures ("und.meld") and exam ("vurd.meldt").
    • Log on minside.hig.no to activate your account. Use the 4 digit PIN code from the semester fee invoice. When activated, check your @hig.no e-mail (set up forwarding if you prefere), try to log in to Fronter and to get access the the open wifi network on campus, they all use the same username (student number) and the password you set.
    • Access the schedule. You can search by class (MIS 2012 is "12HMISA"), by classroom, by teacher or by subject.
    • Read the Student guide
    • Figure out how social you want to be by attending the various happenings the first 1.5 weeks
    • Find the subject descriptions and exam plan
    • Get your student ID card if you haven't already done so.
    • Get to learn LaTeX was recommended for writing your mater thesis (not mandatory, but start as early as possible if you want to use it)
    • Do not copy and paste! Test your work in fronter to avoid any plagiarism claims.
